Day 3 Final reviews

Brno – Marmara 21-11 (16-5)

Two teams whose national federations will need to participate in the first round with the reigning champions competed for the places 7/8 on the final day.

With an additional two minutes per quarter higher scores were possible. And that was exactly what happend on the Czech side in the first half. Good focus in combination with less pressure by defenders made that the match was played long before the final whistle.

It was an occasion for some reserve players to show their skills.

Congratulations to both teams!

Benfica – Szac GG 13-12 (12-12) (8-8)

Two teams that had hoped for more struggled for the fifth place. But especially in Q1 the battle was situated on the defending side with a low score as a result (2-3)

Szac for a short period of time dominated and created a small advance. Time for Benfica to raise the level and to have it all square at half time.

Same scenario in the second half. Much enthusiasm, no success. This game had to be decided by a golden goal. And so it did!

After many minutes it was Joana Faria that scored the winning goal.

Photos by Marco Spelten – actiefotografie.nl & Gertrude Vries – korfbalfoto.nl

Trojans – Pegasus 25-11 (11-6)

It has been a while since we had a clash between the traditional champion teams from England and Germany like it was always the case in the early days of the Europa Cup outdoor.

The English played one of the best tournaments and also now they were master of the game. Pegasus attacks were too transparant and the few shots, even from close by, did not find their way into the korf.

It must be said that at that time the scoring percentage of Trojans was extremely high. With 5 ahead at half time, Germans would still have hope.

Same scenario in the second half, Trojans clearly the better team and Germans trying to reverse the setting.

As a conclusion we may state that this is a well earned bronze for Trojans and that Pegasus earns respect for the efforts that were made to give a strong opponent a hard time.

Photos by Marco Spelten – actiefotografie.nl & Gertrude Vries – korfbalfoto.nl

Top/Solar Compleet – Boeckenberg 31-16 (15-9)

The question was how long the Belgian champion would be able to keep the margin as close as possible. And, it must be said, in the first quarter this went quite well until dominance in rebound from the Dutch and uncontrolled personal defence on the other side resulted in 9-4

In a pure mathematical  perspective the second quarter saw nearly a winner with an accurate Top in the beginning and a better scoring Boeckenberg towards the end.

What is always a problem when playing Dutch teams, is difference in length giving attacks oceans of time to prepare shots and to give confidence to shooters. Boeckenberg did what was possible but was insufficient to create surprises (21-12 after Q3)

Match over and moments for other players to have a taste of topkorfball.

Congratulations to the KBKB for a perfect tournament. A better final would have been a beautiful present but Top was too outstanding.

Day 2 Morning games

Day 2 Morning reviews

Benfica – Trojans GG: 13-14 (regular: 13-13) (half time: 8-10)

We should be able to plan the key games for the evening session. Obviously this match was decisive for places 3 and 4. This means struggle, passion and effort between two teams equally strong.

None of the competitors could create a margin and there was never a decrease of tension. All what is needed for a top game was there, close defence, attacks interrupted by the sound of the shot clock, blocked shots and beautiful tactical plays. The smallest of margins with 5′ to go in favour of Trojans forced the Portugese to take risks and the English were not prepared to suffer from the same mistakes as before against Boeckenberg. (12-13)

With 11″ to go Benfica managed to equal the score with a golden goal scenario as a result. The first English attack being unsuccessful, the second one was the good one. After what they showed in the previous matches, maybe a well earned victory.

So typical for korfball that losers and winners embraced each other despite joy and disappointment!

Photos by Marco Spelten – actiefotografie.nl – korfbalfoto.nl

Brno – Pegasus 15-17 (6-6)

Also now one could expect a close game. And although the tempo was much slower with less scoring, it remained an interesting confrontation. One could feel that this match would only start after the break.

After some tactical instructions of the coaches we noticed more speed but mixed with rougher actions  and infringements but also more goals. This is exactly what was needed to please spectators. The Germans , due to a better rebound in attack, took the lead in Q3. Too many easy shots from a close range were missed by Brno attackers with time unavoidably running out.

Photos by Marco Spelten – actiefotografie.nl – korfbalfoto.nl

Boeckenberg – Marmara 16-13 (10-5)

The fact that after the first quarter the Belgian champion had the lead (2-1) against a qualifier from the first round forces to say that Belgian korfball is going through a crisis.

Luckily there was a bunch of sheering school children to encourage the Belgians where the present korfball community was astonished by the performance of the Turkish team that was able to score 13 goals!

Photos by Marco Spelten – actiefotografie.nl – korfbalfoto.nl

Szac – Top/Solar Compleet (2-10)

It was an opportunity for the Hungarians to show the strong progress they made the last years against a B team of Top.

As indicated earlier Szac did not play their best tournament, leaving the best players on te bench. The reserves still have a long way to go. Defence maybe was all right but just two scores score after 16′ is not very inspiring.

Top, on the other hand, amused the public with unconventional attacks with one handed running in shots.

The second half was the better one fro Szac. Was it not for the playing level, shots went in more easily to stroll to an acceptable final result

Photos by Marco Spelten – actiefotografie.nl – korfbalfoto.nl

Day 2 Evening games

Day 2 Evening reviews

Benfica – Brno 9-8 (4-6)

The match that would decide who was going to play for places 7-8 or 5-6 seemed to be in favour for Brno at least in the first half.

And even later it remained unpredictable what be the outcome. Two teams eager to avoid first rounds played too carefully and therefore too slow. This made it easy for defenders to prevent opponents from shooting and on top we marked many attacks without shots.

At the end it was the inspiration of the best Portugese player that sentenced Brno to a trip to Saint Etienne.

Photos by Marco Spelten – actiefotografie.nl – korfbalfoto.nl

Marmara – Szac 7-17 (4-9)

Marmara completely missed their start and was condemned to a pursuit all the way through the match.

It was very unfortunate that Marmara was unable to repeat a previous performance which would have given a hard time to the Hungarians. At the end it became a walk over.

One may hope that Marmara will seize a chance during a first round tournament to qualify for 2020.

Photos by Marco Spelten – actiefotografie.nl – korfbalfoto.nl

Trojans – Top/Solar Compleet 5-21 (2-9)

What can you say in favour of a team that scores only 2 goals in the first and three in the second half time? That it was overpowered by a Dutch champion that is ready for the final!

Trojans played a good tournament so far but it was swiped from the floor by a quick, athletic and powerful Top with an outstanding female scoring machine.

Trojans, with their minds set on the match of the day after, did what they could but that was not enough to prevent the opponent to enjoy the public with dynamic korfball. An opportunity for the English to bring in reserve players to savour high level play.

Photos by Marco Spelten – actiefotografie.nl – korfbalfoto.nl

Boeckenberg – Pegasus 17-12 (9-7)

Much attention for this match. Interesting to find out whether the Germans, like in the Europeans, were able to upset the Belgians. When this was maybe the case in the beginning, too many bad decisions and passes, gave Boeckenberg the occasion to create a gap (6-3)

When shot clocks were replaced due to technical failure Boeckenberg immediately scored two perfectly countered by the Germans keeping the game on the highest level of tension.

Boeckenberg, at the start of Q3, now played the better korfball, whereas Germans were trying with individual actions. With an unstoppable Nick Janssens, after a sabbatical period, the match was decided minutes before the final signal.

Day 1 Morning games

Day 1 Morning Reviews

Marmara – Benfica 8-23 (7-9)

In the beautiful sports venue of Flanders West, a region where the KBKB as an organiser has just one local club, the edition of the IKF Cup took a start with what could be an interesting match between Marmara from Turkey and Benfica from Portugal.

The first half this scenario was respected with an unpredictable outcome. In the second however Benfica gave a push on the gas pedal with a big margin as a result.

Szac – Brno 16-10 (6-3)

With the excellent performance from the Hungarian champion in the first round in mind Brno was facing a strong opponent.Undoubtedly Szac is the best team from the recent past in Hungary whereas the Czechs with some older players could not create a surprise.

It must be said that Czech Republic slowly regains status within their country and, when the number of top teams will increase, we expect then back on the highest level.

Boeckenberg – Trojans 13-12 (7-9)

With the recent results of the Belgian national team in mind, Trojans fielded the best team. This turned out to be a good idea. Boeckenberg had more scoring opportunities, but the Trojans were all the mote accurate!

As Belgian shooting became better in the second half Trojans had to look for solutions. As the attacks failed to keep the ball in possession long enough to create free chances, the lead went to the opponent (11-10 at the start of the fourth quarter)

When everyone was expecting the GG, an uncontrolled move from a Trojan (disrespect of the distance during a penalty) was decisive for the “match of the day”

Top/Solar Compleet 14-6 (6-4)

Is korfball in progress when even Dutch B teams have trouble beating opponents? If this is the case the IKF has a bright future on the competition side.

In a recent past the German national squad did well and it may be that this was reflected on the German champion team. It kept the gap close till even after the break.

The third quarter was all in favour of Top (11-6). Pegasus became a victim of their own enthusiasm with too many infringements and not enough fluid play. No surprise at the end! If it was not for a serious shoulder injury on the German side.

Day 1 Evening games

Day 1 Evening Reviews

Trojans – Marmara 21-6 (12-2)

Trojans recovered well from a major disillusion and left nothing for a weak opponent. In every part of the sport, both scenically and tactically, they were superior. Shots came with much confidence and accuracy resulting in an enormous gap.

Time for Trojans to test some reserve players giving more opportunities to the Turkish team.

Pegasus – Szac 11-8 (7-3)

It could have been a very high level game  but it never came to excitement. Szac had a total off day and the Germans, as a pledge to their injured team mate, never had problems.

A slow paste, bad shooting from both sides did not thrill spectators.

Nevertheless the general level of all teams seems to increase although this was not obvious in this slow match.

Boeckenberg – Benfica 13-6 (6-4)

No problems this time for a highly concentrated Boeckenberg that gave away few chances. Benfica could keep the gap very narrow in the beginning but after the second quarter the Belgian attackers were very successful whereas the defenders prevented the Portugese to take easy shots.

No more close games to satisfy the audience. On the other hand the goal of the match was scored by the IKF secretary general, Joana Faria, after a beautiful assist ion het brother.

Top/Solar Compleet – Brno 25-8 (14-5)

How to resist the supremacy of the giants from The Netherlands? What to do about the easy scoring? Questions that remained unanswered. 9-2 after the first quarter was just the start of a Czech Calvary.

With fluid moves Top showed that this is the team that would be difficult to keep from a next European title!

Some real exciting games took place during this IKF ECUP 2017 Day 2 (Friday, 13 January 2017). The 1st game between Szentendre SZ HE (HUN) and the Catalan CK Vallparadís was an example, and was only decided in the last minutes (13-14). More terrific was the game NC Benfica (POR) – Trojans KC (ENG), won by a decisive goal (9-10) scored by Kathryn Goodridge with only 7 seconds left.

The other games determined all the final games that will be played tomorrow, with the big final at 17:00 (GMT+1) between TOP/Quoratio (NED) and Boeckenberg KC (BEL), just after the Bronze medal game at 15:00 (GMT+1): CK Vallparadís (CAT) – Trojans KC (ENG).
