Media attention during the IKF WKC

The 10th IKF World Korfball Championship in Belgium from 30 October till 8 November 2015 attracted massive media attention all over the world.

The IKF website showed record breaking figures. Worldkorfball.org and the IKF WKC matches had even higher figures till around 10,000 per eventday and over 300,000 page views.

Further we received in each of the websites visitors from more than 100 countries all over the world. The top-10 based on absolute numbers is: Netherlands, Belgium England, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Australia, Czech Republic, Hong Kong China and Russia. On the places 12 and 13 we have two countries – France and United States of America – without participation in the event.

The IKF WKC final was live on Dutch public TV and attracted around 600,000 extra spectators. Belgian public TV showed the final as well; figures later. Both TV stations showed up in Antwerp with big teams to make side shows as well. And both brought former Dutch and Belgian internationals in as co-commentators. The Dutch had Ms Mady Tims, recent super star. The Belgians had Ms Ilse Poinart. She scored the decisive goal that brought Belgium the World Cup in 1991.

Belgian king Philippe was present in the final as well in the sold out Lotto Arena in Antwerp. He took the time to make a photo with the Belgian team and after the match he handed the World Cup to the captain of the World Champions.

In Chinese Taipei all their home team matches were distributed as well.

In Germany the WDR produced a documentary on the IKF WKC around the German national squad. The reporters were very enthusiastic about the great atmosphere during the whole event.

The IKF WKC underlined that media show interest when there is tension and excitement. The korfball players and the staff did a good job as well.

Job Opening: IKF CEO/Managing Director

The IKF is proud to announce – after recent budget approval by the General Meeting – the IKF will instate a new position in its organization: CEO or Managing Director.

The IKF encourages all those that are interested and capable to apply. Do you know someone in your network that would fit the job position? Please help the korfball community identifying this candidate by referring him or her to this job, or by informing one of the IKF Exco members of this person so we may approach him or her directly.

The official job posting is included below:

Organisation:

The International Korfball Federation has been the governing body for korfball in the world since 1933. Korfball is the only mixed gender team sport in the world. Korfball started over 110 years ago in the Netherlands. Korfball is played on all five continents in the world. The IKF has close to 70 member countries. Further controlled growth is expected in the years to come.

The IKF has been recognised by the International Olympic Committee and is a member of ARISF, IWGA and SportAccord. Our anti-doping rules are in compliance with the World Anti Doping Code. Korfball is included in the FISU World Championship series.

The IKF is largely a volunteer organisation supported by a small administrative staff. The office in Zeist is the centre of many daily activities to support Competitions, Refereeing, Development and Education, Marketing, Anti-Doping, Planning and Control, Administration and Public Relations.

The IKF is led by a 9 member Council that is elected by the General Meeting of National Associations. Many volunteers work on committees and events to realize elite competitions, courses and development activities, and promote healthy and fair sport.

The current office consisting of one administrative assistant provides administrative support to the IKF Council and its committees, and provides information and some services to the national member organizations.

Position:

In line with our strategy, the IKF wants to make a major step towards further professionalizing its key activities. We are seeking a chief executive officer (CEO) that will enhance the strategic profile of the federation and our activities.

The CEO will report to the Executive Committee with a direct reporting line to the President and/or Senior Vice-President. S/he will be responsible for providing strategic direction as well as directing the policy, operations and development of the Federation for the achievement of both long and short term global objectives of the sport of korfball.

In addition, s/he will be expected to provide general and specific direction for the day-to-day management of the Federation through but not limited to event management, administrative management, financial management, marketing, and development. S/he will directly manage one administrative assistant and provide hands-on managerial support to multiple committees and volunteers. The CEO will initially lead or support two new task forces: one aimed at establishing a new Korfball4 major event and one aimed at connecting to our community to further develop and connect to our volunteer base.

The CEO takes final responsibility for all administrative processes, such as the processes around official IKF events, development grant requests, general meetings and meetings of the Council and Executive Committee, and official rules and regulations. It is obvious that this requires an excellent oral and written command of the English language.

The position is based in our Headquarter Office in Zeist, Netherlands. We would expect her/him to be able to commute to Zeist at least half of the regular working time.

Candidate:

The successful candidate should exhibit strong management, leadership, strategic thinking and communication skills with a sound record of project management and achieving results.

The candidate should possess a college or graduate degree in Sports Management, Sports Marketing, or Event Management, or a different degree with demonstrable experience in sports management. We expect the following experience:

  • At least five years’ experience in senior management roles, with direct line responsibility, ideally within the sports industry
  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating events, and liaison with national and/or international organisations, sponsors and Government bodies

You must be fluent (oral and written) in English and at least one other language (preferably Dutch and/or Spanish). Sports must be a proven substantial part of your education and working experience. Korfball must be more than just familiar to you. You must be a self-starter, proactive, a strong communicator with various levels of people in different cultural environments. Preferable working or living experience in multiple countries. Working hours are not strict to obey and regular out of normal office hours participation is required. You are prepared to travel and used to managing organizations and events on a tight budget. You are familiar with the common software packages and should be social media savvy. You have the ability to become a serious counterpart for the members of the Executive Committee. Our external partners will experience you as a natural representative of korfball.

Given our policy to actively promote gender balance in sports administration, we specifically encourage women to apply for this position.

Salary and benefits

The salary is in accordance with the Dutch collective labour agreement in the sport industry, with an annual gross salary in scale 13, amounting to a maximum of approximately EUR 65,000 annually, including benefits. Eventual salary will depend on qualification and experience.

Application:

We want to receive your application, motivation and CV electronically. Your application in English should be directed before 15 December to the IKF Senior-Vice President, Mr Frans Walvis, at frans.walvis@ikf.org, and sent in copy to the IKF Secretary General, Mr Graham Crafter, at graham.crafter@ikf.org.

An assessment might be part of the selection process.

We do not want to receive commercial applications.
