Colombian President Santos visits korfball competition

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos visited today the korfball competition at the World Games in Cali. Santos, who was unable to attend the Opening Ceremony of the World Games, picked korfball as the event to attend in a short visit to Cali. Media attention was extensive, with dozens of national TV and Radio stations covering the visit. President Santos assisted Colombian national team player Camilo in doing a running-in shot in the middle of the court, and he greeted the players of the Netherlands and Portugal before their match. He stayed for a short additional period to watch the beginning of the match before proceeding to a press conference.

Opening ceremony World Games 2013

The opening ceremony of the 9th World Games in Cali, Colombia took place in front of 35,000 spectators in the sold-out stadium on the evening of 25 July, another 40,000 watching the event on a large screen outside the stadium, and hundreds of thousands of Caleños celebrating the opening of the event in the streets. It’s the 1st time this multi-sport event is held on the South American continent.

The 4,500 athletes and officials coming from 101 countries from all over the world will participate in competitions in 31 sports till August 4th.

The korfball event will start July 31st and the finals will be played August 4th

The Mundialista Coliseum in Cali, venue for the korfball tournament at The World Games is nearby ready. The schedule foresees completion of the venue by the end of this week.

Dutch national coach resigns after the World Games

Jan Sjouke van den Bos resigns after the World Games in Cali, Colombia.

Wim Scholtmeijer will be the successor as of January 1, 2014 as the national coach of the strongest korfball nation in the world. Wim is at the moment the KNKV U23 coach.

Jan Sjouke van den Bos will continue to serve korfball and international korfball in another function within KNKV, the Royal Dutch Korfball Federation. He will be master coach to develop even further the level and quality of training- and coaching programs. Special attention in his work will be the increase in the competiveness for the top korfball countries and the increase in the number of countries that challenge the so called A-countries; The Netherlands, Belgium and Chinese Taipei.

Van den Bos serves as Dutch national coach since 1999; he is 14 years in his job. He was the first full time bondscoach in The Neterlands. He has an enormous list of championship results: 3 times IKF World Korfball Champion, 3 times IKF European Korfball Champion and so far 3 times gold in the World Games. Another gold medal in Cali Colombia on August 4, 2013 would give a 10th title as national coach.

Roof construction of World Games korfball venue almost completed

Construction at the Mundialista Coliseum in Cali, venue for the korfball tournament at The World Games is progressing rapidly now with construction of the roof almost completed. The schedule foresees completion of the venue by the end of June.

Great Britain Squad announced for World Games 2013

England Korfball’s senior Head Coach, Dave Buckland has selected on behalf the British Korfball Association (BKA) a squad of 14 players that will travel to Cali, Colombia in the summer of 2013 to compete in the ninth edition of the World Games.

The Great Britain Korfball squad for the 2013 World Games features a number of experienced Internationals including Captain Tony Woodvine (Trojans KC) as well as first time call-ups for Nottingham’s Jess Beale and Kingfisher’s John Denton.

GB Squad list in full:

Females: Aimee Evans (Bec), Carla Bennett (Norwich Knights), Jess Beale, Hannah Lorrimer (Nottingham), Steph Allen, Neala Brennan and Amy Turner (Trojans).

World Games Korfball 2013

During the International Korfball Federation Executive Committee April 21st 2013 meeting the IKF Exco made a draw to establish the pools for the Korfball Event during the World Games. The World Games will take place in Cali, Colombia between 24 July and 4 August 2013. The Korfball Event will be played from 31 July to 4 August 2013

The World Games is the most important korfball event in the IKF’s 2013 calendar.

The result of the draw is:

The teams in all four lines were drawn with each set of two teams based on the current IKF Ranking.

Cali korfball community developing

The Cali (COL) korfball community is gradually growing and developing. While on an inspection visit for The World Games, which are due to be held in Cali (COL) this Summer, IKF President Fransoo met with local korfball developer Mr Pedro Sanchez, and attended a training session of some of the Cali players.

Currently, the total community is still small, and consists of about 35 players, mostly students of various universities in Cali. The main limitations are the availability of a space to practice, and the lack of korfball knowledge. However, during the visit, the IKF signed an agreement with the Escuela Nacional de Deporte and the Sports Administration of the City of Cali to work together to develop korfball, as a legacy to The World Games korfball presence. As part of the agreement, the city will make available a permanent outdoor space for training and playing. The space, in one of the sports parks at a central location in the city, will allow thousands of Calenos to watch and experience korfball. Further, the IKF will work with the END to educate korfball coaches, such that korfball could be included in the elective course program of END, and the coaches could work with Cali’s 22 communities to teach korfball to kids across the city.
