The World Games: great opportunity for korfball

The World Games 2017 is around the corner! The 10th edition of the Games will be held in Wroclaw, Poland, 20–30 July 2017. More than 3,000 athletes from 31 sports and 111 countries will take part in the biggest sport event ever staged in Poland. The Korfball event will start 21 July and the finals will be played on 25 July.

The World Games are a big multi sports event and are a great opportunity to show korfball to a big crowd and accent the unique characteristics of the sport. This can be very helpful for the development of korfball in general and coming closer to the Olympic dream.

Former World Games sport Rugby made it to the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016 and Karate, Sport Climbing, Surfing and Baseball/Softball will be present in Tokyo 2020. Earlier, The World Games sports Badminton, Triathlon and Taekwondo became Olympic sports in 2000 and Beach Volleyball in 1996. Dance Sport will be on the programme of the Youth Olympics 2018 as well as Karate and Sport Climbing. IWGA President José Perurena states it clear: “The World Games are a stepping stone to the Olympics.”

IOC Sports Director Kit McConnell says: “As we look for getting more flexibility into the programme of the Olympic Games in the future, certainly The World Games is one of the areas we are looking to observe, see the sports, see them performed at a very high level and with the best athletes in those sports. Obviously we are looking for sports that bring a real value to the programme.”

Dr. Thomas Bach, President of the IOC, has confirmed that he will be present at The World Games Opening Ceremony in Wroclaw on 20th July 2017. In his letter to IWGA President José Perurena, the IOC President states that he will also attend several sports events during his stay. It will not be the first time that Dr. Bach attends an Opening Ceremony of The World Games. He was also present at the opening of The World Games 2013 in Cali/ Colombia, together with Jacques Rogge, his predecessor in office. Thomas Bach was Vice President of the IOC at that time.

IOC Recognizes Importance of The World Games

LAUSANNE (19/4/2016) The International World Games Association (IWGA) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) agreed on a new Memorandum of Understanding on Tuesday. IOC President Dr. Thomas Bach and President José Perurena of the IWGA signed this important agreement about mutual support during the SportAccord Convention in Lausanne. This document supersedes the previous Memorandum of Understanding dated 27 October 2000.

The MoU underlines the closer cooperation between the IOC and the IWGA which was set out in Recommendation 6.1 of Olympic Agenda 2020. This states “…the IOC and the International World Games Association (IWGA) to closely cooperate regarding the sports programme composition and their respective evaluations.” The new agreement confirms that “the IOC recognises the importance of The World Games as a multi-sport event and the IWGA is committed to develop its activities in the Olympic spirit and in conformity with the Olympic Charter.”

The MoU explains the principles of how this overall cooperation can be further developed. One of these principles is that the IWGA accepts that only events that are not on the programme of the Olympic Games can be included in the programme of The World Games (TWG). The IWGA shall also ensure that only sports whose International Federations are recognised by the IOC or are already members of the IWGA will be included in the official sports programme of TWG.
The IOC agrees to grant patronage to Organising Committees of The World Games and to provide technical assistance. This means for example that the IOC and the IWGA shall explore possibilities of closer cooperation on their respective communication, promotion and marketing programmes. Furthermore, the IOC will provide its expertise and help to promote IWGA’s activities within the Olympic Movement and encourages the NOCs to support and assist their national multi-sport delegations taking part in TWG.

Part of the agreement signed on Tuesday is the assurance: “The IWGA shall continue to develop a close working relationship with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to facilitate education and testing programs, and doping controls conducted at The World Games according to the World Anti-Doping Code.”

IWGA President José Perurena said after the signing ceremony: “This Memorandum of Understanding tremendously enhances the status of The World Games. Working in cooperation with the IOC is essential for us to raise the level of competition and organization of our Games. I want to thank IOC President Dr. Thomas Bach for his enormous support and for working with on this document. It proves that we are a real part of the Olympic movement and a member of the Olympic family.”

The World Games 2017: Who has qualified? (update)

(updated 8 November 2015) The IKF had drastically changed the qualification criteria for the World Games 2017 (TWG 2017), such that a better global balance would be attained while retaining the quality of the event.

In the qualification procedure, Poland had been qualified automatically as host country, while any non-European country would qualify if it would finish in the top-11 of the IKF WKC 2015. The remaining countries would be the top European countries.

Catalonia has declined the opportunity to take part, as Catalonia is not an IOC-recognized country. As in the past, if England would qualify, they would enter the World Games representing Great Britain.

(9 November 2015). The following eight countries qualified:

1. Poland (host country)

2. China (non-European country reaching WKC top 8; 7th place)

3. Chinese Taipei (non-European country reaching WKC top 8; bronze medal)

4. Australia (non-European country finishing 11th place)

The remaining countries in the World Games 2017 will be from Europe. These include the four remaining highest finishers in this IKF WKC:

5. The Netherlands

6. Belgium

7. England

8. Germany

World Games 2017 qualification criteria

The International World Games Association (IWGA) awarded the next World Games in July 2017 to Wroclaw in  Poland some years ago.

The IKF Council decided on the qualification criteria for the korfball event during the World Games. Again eight national teams participate in the korfbal event. The Netherlands is the reigning World Games Champion.

Which teams qualify?

In principle Poland as the host country qualify. Furthermore any non-European team finishing in the top-11 at the IKF World Korfball Championship 2015 in Belgium qualify.  The other national teams come from Europe.

Mady Tims IWGA athlete of the month

Today the International World Games Association published the announcement:

Congratulations to Mady Tims, IWGA Athlete of the Month for April 2015. The Korfball player (38) from the Netherlands gave her farewell at the Dutch Korfball League Finale on 11 April. More than 10,000 spectators at the sold-out Ahoy arena in Rotterdam experienced the touching goodbye.  She left the court right after her PKC/SWK Groep teammate, Johannis Schott, scored four seconds before the end the winning point.

With a huge cheer from her fans, white tulips from her teammates, and tears in her eyes, it was a moment to be cherished. Her club, PKC, won the final match against TOP by a score of 22 to 21. Mady Tims left the court as a champion. She helped to make it happen by scoring a point  in the final. It was the 500th korf in her career as a player for PKC.

The English commentator of the match described her as the “most fantastic player in the world of Korfball”. Jan Fransoo, President of the International Korfball Federation, called her, “a korfball icon”. She said after the match and her emotional farewell, “Korfball is my passion”. She added, “There are so many great moments I can look back to.”

Indeed, “Lady” (her nickname) Tims is a three-time European Champion, and three-time World Champion with the national team of the Netherland. The Dutch team, with her help, won the TWG 2005 Gold Medal in Duisburg, Germany.

“Winning the title with PKC made my last match so special”, she said after the match in Rotterdam in April. That’s the way she likes to step down. In 2011 when she retired from the Dutch national team, it was the final of the World Korfball Championship in China. The title match against the archrival Belgium was her final international competition. She scored three times for her team, which won 32:26.
Watch her last match and the emotional moment of her substitution four seconds before the end of the final on The World Games Channel.

Great opportunity for USA Korfball as World Games 2021 are awarded to Birmingham

Immediately following the signing of the contract between the International World Games Association and the City of Birmingham, Alabama, USA, the IKF President met with the Local Organizing Committee of the 2021 World Games to discuss development of korfball in the US towards the 2021 Games. It turns out to be an excellent impetus for korfball in North America.

Birmingham edged Ufa (Russia) and Lima (Peru) in the race to win the 2021 Games. With no presence of korfball in the Southern US, both a challenge and an opportunity exists. President Fransoo discussed the contours of a development strategy with the LOC, who are extremely enthousiastic about korfball following the great performance in Cali. The initial contours of the development plan are aimed at the inclusion of korfball in the program of local schools, with a focus on the inner city of Birmingham, and the joint effort between IKF, USA Korfball, and the LOC to develop a new base of elite players in Birmingham. With six years to go, a focused program with elite athletes should be aimed at developing a competitive US team for the 2021 Games.

President Fransoo: “While there are several dispersed local community groups, school and colleges across the US playing korfball, a good structure and program is not in place. This is an excellent opportunity to work with the City and LOC of Birmingham to work on a common objective to have a competitive US team in the 2021 Games.”

World Games 2021

The president of the  International World Games Association (IWGA), Mr José Perurena, just announced (22 January 2015) the World Games in 2021 will take place in the city of Birmingham, in the state Alabama, USA; click for more info.

The 2021 edition will be the 11th World Games multi-sports event with 25+ sports, about 4,500 athletes and officials from approximately 100 countries. Korfball is on the program since 1985 in London, England.

After the first World Games in 1981 in Santa Clara, USA this will be the return to the USA.

During its meetings on 21 January 2015 the IWGA Executive Committee made a final assessment of the bids from Birmingham (USA), Lima (Peru) and Ufa (Russia), and evaluated the delegations’ final presentations. The IWGA Executive Board took the final decision on the host city for the 11th edition of this multi-sports event at its meeting earlier this morning.

The IKF congratulates the city of Birmingham and we are eager to show up with korfball in 2021 as well.
