The FISU announced the 35 host cities for the 2018 FISU University World Championships. As of 2018 korfball is part of the FISU Calendar.

This follows the first test event in 2015 in England and the very positive evaluation by the FISU / IKF afer the event in April.

The 2018 FISU University World Korfball Championship is awarded to Vila Real, a city in the north of Portugal.

First FISU World University Korfball Championship to be held in 2018

The International University Sports Federation FISU has confirmed via its website that it has accepted korfball as an official sport in their World Championship series. The confirmation follows the successful endorsement by FISU of the IKF University World Cup held in Norwich last month.

FISU is most known for organizing the Universiade World Student Games, held every two years in odd years, with the 2015 edition to be held in Gwangju, Korea, and the 2017 edition in Taipei. Apart from this multi-sport event, FISU also organises World University Championships in more than 30 disciplines in 2016. Korfball will now be added as a new discipline to this series from 2018 onwards.

Countries interesting in hosting this event should have their national university sport federation make a bid to FISU by 1 September 2015, following which FISU will select and announce the host in December 2015 (exact dates tbc). Registration of participating teams will also be dealt with by the national student sport federations.

In the meantime, FISU has appointed Mr Gert Dijkstra (NED) as it Technical Delegate for korfball, and Mr Warman Cheng (HKG) as its Substitute Technical Delegate for korfball.

The IKF is happy with the rapid and visionary process for including korfball on FISU’s calendar, following support by Ms Rosaura Mendez, President of the Costa Rica Korfball Association and Member of the FISU Executive Committee, Helen Searle, IKF Special Delegate for equal opportunity, and Paulo Ferreira and Julien Buhajezuk of FISU’s World Championship department. Also, the IKF wishes to thank the English Korfball Association and the British Student Korfball Association for organizing the test event in the UK at such short notice and the countries that took part in the event for participating.

IKF University Korfball World Cup starts next week

In almost one week time the IKF, the English Korfball Association (EKA) and the Local Organising Committee will welcome the eight competing teams in Norwich (England) at the “IKF UKWC 2015 patronaged by FISU” event.

We bring you up to date the final pools + match schedule + timings.  The IKF UKWC event is:

  • New tournament, so no recent history about results & ranking
  • Therefore we used the global IKF ranking as starting-point
  • All teams can play for the championship
  • Pool A + B by drawing pairs, so no predictable pools, although there is no recent history.

Due to the late Russian withdrawel, luckily replaced on very short notice by NED 2 (thanks to KNKV), based on above mentioned criteria and review by the IKF Competitions Committee the IKF CC jumped to the conclusion to change from drawing pairs into the snake-procedure. Following the snake-procedure and the above mentioned criteria the IKF CC decided on the pools A and B. The IKF UKWC pools and match schedule is filled accordingly; IKF UKWC 2015 Pools + Match schedule; click here.
