IKF lift suspension of the Korfball Federation of India

The Council of the International Korfball Federation has decided to lift the suspension of the Korfball Federation of India (KFI) with immediate effect. The decision follows extensive reforms that have taken place in the governance of the KFI, and these governance changes have been found to be in line with the requirement of the IKF and the Sports Code of India.

The KFI was suspended by the General Meeting of the IKF in November 2015 following extensive governance problems in the longest-playing korfball country in Asia. In the new governance structure, active korfball athletes are now at the heart of governance, with only states that actively develop korfball now eligible to retain their right to vote in the KFI General Meeting. Further, the voting powers of all others, such as Founder Members, have been removed.

President Mishra of the KFI has committed himself to now focusing on korfball development in the South Asian nation. IKF President Fransoo and IKF Asia President Huang wish Mr Mishra every success in his endeavours and hope to see India develop competitively such that it can reach a top-10 position in the world again. Until 20 years ago, India was among the ten strongest countries in the world when governance problems started to hamper the development of the mixed-gender team sport.

Never ending story of Korfball Development continues in Thailand with the persistent efforts of KAT and the support of IKF Asia and CTKA

Korfball Association of Thailand (KAT) once again justifies the IKF choice for being awarded 2019 IKF World Korfball Awards – the Best Grassroots Development to KAT. Less than a week after the wrap up of the IKF World Korfball Championship Ms. Bird Hsieh and Prof. Inglish Huang accompanied by 4 elite players of Chinese Taipei namely Ms Celin Lin, Ms. Ema Lin, Mr. Jason Chan, and Mr. Shen-chieh Wang representing the IKF Asia have started another intense education and promotion activities in Thailand from 17th to 25th August 2019.

Chinese Taipei Korfball Association (CTKA) as always, played a crucial role by supporting the activities and by bearing the costs towards international flights.

In the first phase of the activities IKF level 1 Coach Course was organised in Udonthani on 17 – 18 August. During the dinner, Mr. Bou Chumserey and Dr. Hou Sitthisophealai initially agreed to organize a korfball coach and referee courses with the cooperation and support of KAT and IKF Asia in the second week of December 2019. The face-to-face communication with Mr. Bou Chumserey has taken a concrete step of letting korfball included in the competition program of 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia.

This abundantly educating and promoting the tour in Thailand could not be so successful without the tireless contribution of KAT’s core leaders. They are Dr. Tuk, Ms. Untika Thammaphati (Nok), Secretary-General of KAT, and Ms. Dr. Phichayavee Panurushthano (Aim), coach of Thailand national korfball squad.

IKF awards 2023 WKC to Taipei and 2027 WKC to the Netherlands; EKC 2022 to the Czech Republic

The next IKF World Korfball Championship in 2023 will be held in Taipei (TPE), following a decision of the IKF Council announced here in Durban, South Africa. In a parallel decision, the IKF awarded the 2027 IKF World Korfball Championship to the Netherlands, who had prepared a bid with Rotterdam as the main location. The Netherlands had prepared their bid for 2023, but had confirmed that it would upheld its bid for 2027 after the initial secret vote by the 9 members of the IKF Council.

IKF President Fransoo announces the hosts of the 2023 and 2027 WKC

IKF President Fransoo announces the hosts of the 2023 and 2027 WKC

IKF President Fransoo: “With awarding this series of Championships we reward the outstanding bids received, and also lay out a clear path for the next decade for our global competitions: The World Games in the United States in 2021, the WKC 2023 in Taipei (TPE), TWG 2025 in Chengdu (CHN), and the IKF WKC 2027 in the Netherlands. The next step is to now align this roadmap with the CTKA, ChKA, and KNKV with our strategic roadmap for the next decade. We are very confident this will be great for all athletes and for the sport at large”

Taipei 2023

The bid developed by the Chinese Taipei Korfball Association offers an extensive four year program for further marketing of korfball across Chinese Taipei, and providing extensive hosting support to the participating nations. The competition will be played in Taipei, and has received extensive support from the Taipei City government, with a personal effort by Mayor Wen-Je Ko, and from the Sport Administration on the island. With Chinese Taipei currently ranked 2nd in the world, and missing the final of this year’s World Korfball Championship in South Africa by a mere golden goal loss in the semifinal, the IKF WKC will be held in Chinese Taipei for the very first time. The previous WKCs were held twice in Asia (China and India), once in Oceania (Australia), once in Africa (South Africa). The remaining edition have been held in Europe.

Netherlands 2027

Similar to Chinese Taipei, the Royal Netherlands Korfball Association KNKV had prepared an extensive and professional bid, with support of the Mayor of Rotterdam, The Netherlands Olympic Committee, the Ministry of Sport, among many. The bid excelled in a vision of focusing on sports excellence, with a first-ever athlete village to be created with temporary housing in the Rotterdam Ahoy’s Sports and Convention complex that would be converted to a World Korfball Village, and extensive multi-year partnerships between the strongest clubs in the Netherlands and the envisioned 24 countries that would take part, under the banner “Twinning is Winning”. The IKF and KNKV have agreed to jointly investigate to what extent the partnership program could already start within the next few years. The vision is fully embeded in global korfball’s Olympic ambition, for which the IKF Congress had laid out a first roadmap earlier in the week.

Czech Republic

The Czech bid for the 2023 IKF WKC did not make it. However, the Czech Korfball Association had in parallel submitted a bid for the IKF European Korfball Championship 2022, and the IKF Council awarded the CzKA the elit competition, only second in size and impact after the WKC. The championship is strongly related towards multi-year school development with which the Czechs plan to double their membership in the next 3 years.

IKF extends contract with CEO Tilbert La Haye

The International Korfball Federation has extended the contract with its CEO Tilbert La Haye. La Haye, a Dutch national, joined the IKF in 2016. He has headed the IKF operations since then with great success. Under his leadership, the professionalism in day-to-day operations has increased substantially. Furthermore, he has taken new initiatives such as the IKF Beach Korfball World Cup series, and programs to develop the administration and playing strength of the many young national organizations that have joined the IKF in the past decade.

IKF President Fransoo: “We are very happy to have reached an agreement with Mr La Haye. With his expertise, knowledge, and energy, he has brought new initiatives, and new structure to the operations and development of the IKF. We look forward to seeing our sport, our federation, and our national organizations develop further under his executive leadership.”

Tilbert La Haye: “I am very proud of the confidence the IKF shows by extending my contract for the years to come. We have been making major steps forward with our intensified international competition calendar – particularly in youth –  and the development of the IKF Beach Korfball World Cup series, with events upcoming in Belgium, Hong Kong and China. This is a good foundation for extending our marketing and sponsorship proposition, which we are currently aligning with our unique gender-equality requirement in every single korfball match played wherever.”
